PSRC vs Team CH

18 April 2010 One Comment

It was an early Sunday morning which would have most of us snuggled up in bed, but the players from Team CH were up and ready to play their game way before their coach arrived. Similarly to the previous weekend, the opponents only reached the court 15 minutes before the match after the players were all warmed up and ready to go. Buoyed by the victory last week, the players were eager to get a good win today as well having observed their opponents in the earlier games. However, their confidence bordered on complacency which almost caught up on them in the game.

The players stuck to the game plan in the first period, passing and pushing up the pace of the game and it was no wonder Jarryl put the team ahead after 4 minutes. Crenshawn made it 2 shortly after before PSRC hit one back in the 12th minute. Kin Phang extended the lead by finishing the pass from Soon Kiang and Darius made it 1-4 with 30 seconds of the period left with a drag shot from the left side into the far top corner.

The coach sensed a potential drop in intensity and encouraged the players to keep things simple and to go on full court pressure. True to his words, PSRC struck one against the team and added another after 6 minutes of play. Joshua then did the unexpected when he made a routine pass to Jarryl too close to Lander and was deflected in unwittingly into their own goal. All of a sudden, the score was tied at 4-4 when we should have extended the lead beyond reach.

Joshua then made amends for his error to put one in beyond the PSRC goalkeeper to put the team back in the driving seat. Jarryl squeezed his shot in at the near post from an acute angle following a glorious through pass from Joshua from half court. The team now at least have a comfortable 2-goal cushion to bring in to the final period.

Team CH raised their game and Darrell scored from the right with a great drag shot. Crenshawn followed 2 minutes later, drawing the goalkeeper out of his area and finishing into the roof of the goal cleanly. Darius showed class to add on the goal tally halfway through the period. PSRC was allowed to score on a breakaway after causing a confusion with his cross court run among the defenders. Su Kiat finally got his goal after having many chances saved or narrowly wide with 4 minutes left to play.

It was all along a game which we would comfortably win, but the team must learn from the way they took their feet off the pedal in the second period to allow the opponents to catch up, they may not be able to recover against stronger opponents. The players have to remember that there is never an easy game until the final scoreline tells us so. With 2 tough games coming up, the team needs to maintain their focus for the entire game in order to do well.
