CHS vs EVS

1 February 2010 3 Comments

After the lost against Tech Whye Secondary School, a win against East View Secondary School today would be crucial to keeping our qualification hopes alive. The players had a full week of rest and were all fresh and eager to give it their all for this game. It will definitely be a tight game from what was observed in the opponent’s previous match and the spectators who turned up at the venue were no doubt happy to be treated to what was a thrilling match for both teams.

The Eagles put the team under pressure right from the start and had several chances at goal. On 2 occasions, their shots were prevented from going in by the slightest of deflection off the goal posts. They were unable to take advantage of the possession that they had and a counter attack saw Jarryl put in a long shot just beyond the goalkeeper to take the lead. The match was far from resolved and the opponents nicked the equaliser before the period came to an end.

Catholic High School vs East View Secondary School
VS Indoor Sports Hall
5-5 (1-1, 1-1, 3-3)

The second period was tight and it was only until midway through the period when the defenders hesitation created just enough space for the opponent to shoot into the top corner of our goal. The team was not to be outdone and with 30 seconds left of the period, a timely line change resulted in a high ball right to the opposing goal which eluded the opponents for Samuel to touch the ball in off his shaft to draw level.

The team is getting into their groove and a long shot by Darrell ended up in the bottom left corner of the goal. Another shot towards the goal was rebounded in by Darrell to extend our lead to 4-2. The team was now in the driving seat but East View had other ideas. A long throw by their goalkeeper found their captain, who made no mistake with a quick spin and shot into the top corner of the goal. With a few minutes left in the match, Dion made a pass through the middle which was intercepted by the opponent for the equaliser.

The coach had to reorganise the team and spur them on for the winner with 1 minute left on the clock. A mazy dribble by Jarryl saw the ball ended up at Joshua’s feet. With his back to the goal, he hooked the ball backwards to surprise the goalkeeper, putting us ahead again by a single slender goal. With a final push, the Eagles pressed forward and took a long shot at goal. The ball was heading off target but a lucky deflection by another forward directed the ball into the roof of the goal for a dramatic last gasp equaliser.

It was an even match with both teams taking their chances. However, the team was left to mull over the reasons why they were unable to shut out the opponents twice to maintain our lead. This result meant that qualification for the next round is out of our hands even if we win the next 2 games. All that is left is to play the next two games well to build on our goal difference.
