AES vs CHS

10 February 2010 No Comment

Catholic High School ended their hopes of qualifying for the second round of the National Floorball Championships even as they overran Assumption English School by 9-1. In a game that the team needed to beat by almost 16 goals, the players started off well, keeping the tempo of the game high and always pressuring the defenders in an effort to win the ball back for possession. With a superior number of shots at goal, the team could only agonize at the numerous near misses which they attempted.

The first period eventually ended goalless as Assumption English School sought to defend their goal mouth in numbers, restricting the team to only shots from outside the slot area. The Catholic High Players were dominating the game however, and it will definitely be a matter of time before the first goal is scored.

True enough, 5 minutes into the second period, Jarryl finally tucked the ball into the opposite goal post after some deft dribbling. He scored another one 3 minutes later to give the team a 2-goal lead but a successful counter attack by the opponents saw them pull a goal back midway through the period. Crenshawn made our dominance count together with Joshua and Jarryl completed his hat-trick with 8 seconds left on the clock to extend the scoreline to 1-5.

Ryan notched his first goal of the game 5 minutes into the third period and Crenshawn added another not long after. It was mostly one way as Joshua capitalised on a line change error by the opponents to shoot into an open goal. Isaac ended off the game with his first goal of the tournament with 3 minutes left of the match.

It was a good match with the players giving it their all, but it was still too little too late as they were unable to overcome the huge goal deficit required. Nevertheless, the win was also inconsequential as East View Secondary School beat Teck Whye Secondary School in the subsequent match. Catholic High School as a result was pipped from qualification by a single point.

The season has ended for the ‘B’ Division this year, somewhat prematurely, given the huge potential of the team. However, results do not lie and at the end of the day, it is still the team who came up short against opponents who we should have beaten comfortably. It was a valuable lesson learnt in that sense and the boys will no doubt take heart from it. Hopefully this experience will put the boys in a much better position to again challenge for honours in 2011!
