World Floorball Championship 2008

13 February 2009 3 Comments

The Men’s National Floorball team achieves the best ever results in the recent World Floorball Championship 2008 held in Czech Republic! We would like to congratulate the Singapore Men’s Floorball team for making history by beating their European opponents for the first time. After losing to Austria in the opening match of the competition, Singapore went on to defeat Slovenia 6-5 in the second group match. This came as a surprise as Slovenia was one of the group favourites and were expected to beat the Singapore team easily.

The Singapore team enjoyed a second victory when they convincingly defeated yet another European opponent, the Great Britain in the last group match. Having won 2 out of their 4 group matches, the Singapore team qualified for the 15-16 placing match versus their all-time arch rivals, the Japanese. Again, the Singapore team upheld their position as the best team in the Asia Pacific region when they beat the Japanese with a score 4-2. At the end of the Championships, Singapore emerged as the 15th position. Their joy is doubled when statistics show that this is the highest placing achieved by an Asian team in the Men’s World Floorball Championships.

Prior to these excellent results by the Singapore Men’s Floorball team, the guys had also maintained their Championship titles for 2 years running in APAC 2007, Singapore and APAC 2008, Australia without losing any matches at all during the competition.

Head Coach Filip Dahlgren comments that he was very pleased with the results produced by the national players who represented the nation in the international competitions. He would also like to highlight that even though the team had achieved great results in the recent World Floorball Championships held in Czech Republic, he was particularly proud and impressed by the team in the APAC 2008 as it was mainly made up of the under-19 players. It only goes to show that the talent identification system carried out by the 2008 WFC coaching team has been really efficient, bearing in mind that the team was made up of players with an average age of twenty. This will be useful as a tool in the development of youth players in Singapore and we can definitely look forward to even better results in the coming future.
